THE Ph.D. DISSERTATION
Context:
A Dissertation is a book written by a postgraduate student (a person who has a bachelor’s and master’s degree) under the direct supervision of a university professor. It is presented for public oral defense before an examination committee consisting of the student’s director and usually four other professors with expertise in the subject matter. At least one member of the committee is an “external examiner” coming from another department or from the same discipline, often from another university. Upon successful defense of the dissertation, the student is awarded the Ph.D. degree. In European universities it is common to write a second dissertation for the habilitation or “state doctorate” which is required for teaching at the university level. An equivalent in North and South American universities is to write a second book for the granting of “tenure”, i.e, a permanent appointment that guarantees the teacher’s academic freedom in the discipline.
The direction of postgraduate students in the writing of doctoral dissertations is an integral part of the Research Program of each ICI Fellow. The names of students and titles of dissertations offer an indication of the Fellow’s applied research in a concrete setting at the university indicated. Professors also serve as members of doctoral committees where another faculty person is the director. Such committee memberships often run to two or three times the number of dissertations directed. For the list of such students, please consult the Fellow’s vita on their faculty homepage at their respective university (see MEMBER DIRECTORY). This committee list is especially important for those Fellows who are not in Ph.D. granting departments, but nonetheless are an external examiner for other departments granting of the Ph.D. by their university or as an external examiner at other universities, often in other countries.
